Explanation
The pawn is the most numerous and weakest piece in chess. However, it has the potential to become a more powerful piece through promotion.
Value
A pawn is worth 1 point.
Moves
- Pawns move forward one square at a time.
- On its first move, a pawn can move forward one or two squares.
- Pawns capture diagonally one square forward.
- Pawns cannot move or capture backward.
- If a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece (except a king).
